Historical Overview

At their peak, which most experts agree was in 1958, there were almost 5000 drive-ins. Today, there are less than 500 drive-ins operating in the United States. Despite the dramatic decline the drive-in count experienced in the 1970s and 1980s, new life has been breathed into the drive-in industry starting in the 1990s. With closed drive-ins being reopened and new ones being built, the drive-in industry is holding its ground these days. For more information on drive-ins, see State of the Industry
